Warming Seats at the Hague – John Howard and War Crimes

John Howard

“This should not come as a surprise to Howard. As early as March 20, 2003, he was put on notice by 41 affiliates of the Victorian Peace Network, acting through the Australian firm Slater and Gordon, that government ministers would, in the event of an invasion of Iraq, be ‘investigated and, if appropriate, prosecuted for being complicit in excessive and unjustifiable loss of civilian lives and devastation of non-military infrastructure.’..” Continue reading

Are We Witnessing the Death of Israel by a Thousand Cuts? – Jonathon Power

Even Jimmy Carter, who single handedly (without much Jewish appreciation) has done more to make Israel secure than any other living person, can’t change the march of demographics. Within the boundaries of the State of Israel and the occupied territories there are 5.4 million Jews and 4.6 million Palestinians. The Palestinian birth rate is almost three times that of the Israeli Jews. If anything the Jewish population is starting to fall as an increasing number of Jews decide that Israel has no future for them and in significant numbers emigrate. The far seeing Richard Nixon, when asked by Patrick Buchanan and his wife, how he saw the future of Israel, turned down his thumb “like a Roman emperor at the gladiators’ arena”. Continue reading

Luxury hotels and a fun park: the new Green Zone – SMH – 06 May.08

Tigris Woods

Forget the rocket attacks, concrete blast walls and lack of a sewer system. Now try to imagine luxury hotels, an amusement park, a shopping centre and even condos in the heart of Baghdad.

That’s all part of a five-year development “dream list” – or what some dub an improbable fantasy – to transform the US-protected Green Zone from a walled fortress into a centrepiece for Baghdad’s future.

“The Americans treat the place like they own it. This aint a liberation it’s an occupation” Continue reading

Why Shariah? – New York Times – 18 Mar.08

Last month, Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury, gave a nuanced, scholarly lecture in London about whether the British legal system should allow non-Christian courts to decide certain matters of family law. Britain has no constitutional separation of church and state. The archbishop noted that “the law of the Church of England is the law of the land” there; indeed, ecclesiastical courts that once handled marriage and divorce are still integrated into the British legal system, deciding matters of church property and doctrine. His tentative suggestion was that, subject to the agreement of all parties and the strict requirement of protecting equal rights for women, it might be a good idea to consider allowing Islamic and Orthodox Jewish courts to handle marriage and divorce.

Then all hell broke loose. Continue reading

Islamic summit seeks dialogue with Christian world- SMH – 15 Mar.08

A delegate in the conference hall on the last day of the Organisation of Islamic Conference held in Dakar, Senegal.

World Muslim leaders have condemned extremism and terrorism as incompatible with Islam and proposed a high-level international meeting to promote a “dialogue of civilisations” with the Christian world.

Leaders of the 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which represents 1.5 billion Muslims from across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, made the “Dakar Declaration” after a two-day summit in Senegal’s capital.

Shouldn’t the dialogue be with your own people first? Continue reading

Islam & Women – How I came to love the Veil By Yvonne Ridley

The Bonds That Kill – Obama and Israel By JOSHUA FRANK

Barrack Obama

In an attempt to squelch rumors that he is pro-Palestinian, or god forbid Muslim, Barack Obama made it clear in the final Democratic Presidential debate on Tuesday that he is anything but. After being prodded by NBC’s Tim Russert on the issue, Obama said he has long been a “stalwart friend of Israel’s,” believing the country to be one of the United States’ “most important allies in the region,” and even going as far as to call the security of Israel “sacrosanct.” Continue reading

Saving the Palestinian sinking ship

Israel’s military assault on Gaza appears to ignore the desire of most of the Israeli people to see talks opened with the territory’s Hamas leadership.

But rather than exposing a conflict in Israeli attitudes, it actually reveals two sides of a calculated perennial method of manipulating the leaders of the Palestinian people.

The Israeli establishment’s purpose is to ensure that whichever group leads the Palestinians – Hamas, Fatah or any other group or coalition – it will protect Israel by containing Palestinian resistance, while Israel is free to continue its systematic violence aimed at crushing opposition to its power over the territory.
